Rewind

This dress is inspired by the Korean traditional garment called hanbok and it is infused with American elements in order to portray the Korean American aspect of myself. The length of the dress is short and it does not cover the feet, traditionally hanbok must cover the feet to show modesty but I purposefully made the length short to show the American aspect to this address as well as the halter neck and open back. The halter neck is based on the traditional jeogori, since the jeogori and chima are supposed to be two separate elements, therefore I left the end of the halter neck floating. The fabric manipulation shown in this dress is an image of the mugunghwa (hibiscus), which is the national flower in Korea. Just like the flower itself, the inner part is dark pink and the outer petals are light pink. In terms of fabric choices, I mainly chose linen and silk since they are mainly used in the construction of a hanbok and it adds to the cultural meaning. The usage of mesh fabric for the top layer was to show the flowers underneath the mesh without having to lift the top layer.

Mood Board
Visual Design

I Incorporated a complementary color scheme so that the high contrast could make the dress more eye-catching. Also, the color red and green are commonly used in the traditional Hanbok.
Fabric Manipulation
Early Sketches
Muslin Mockup
Half Muslin Mockup

Created a muslin mockup to see how the dress would drape on the dress form. Used the mockup to test out different lengths of the skirt. Designed all the pattern pieces needed for the dress.

Created the flowers with hand stitching techniques. Used stripes of muslin and pressed the middle to create a crease and used that line to hand stitch the flowers.

Used a medium weight muslin fabric to mimic the real fabric used for the dress.

Real Fabric Construction
Type of Fabric

Bodice - Cotton linen blend

Skirt - Under layer silk, top layer mesh

Strap - Cotton lien blend

Flower - Cotton blend

Sewing Machine

Industrial sewing machine and overlock machine

Flower Creation

I manipulated the fabric by pressing center front line and then placing it in a circular position. The flowers were first pinned on the dress and then sand sewn into the dress.

Finishing

The edges of the dress were finished with an overlock machine to create a clean cut on all edges of the dress.
